Bookbinding
Coptic Stitch
Cut paper with a guillotine blade into the appropriate size for your book.
Fold paper in half and press the crease with the bone folder.
Arrange papers into signatures (grouping of paper), this was organized by 5 papers per signature, and 5 signatures total.
With just an awl or optional bookbinding mallet, punch holes into the crease of the signatures. This allows ease of stitching throughout.
Gather your signatures, waxed bookbinding thread, a bookbinding needle, scissors, and your covers.
Attach front cover with the first signature. The next signature will be stitched onto the first signature.
Keep coptic stitching throughout, you will be going inside and outside consistently and through each hole you punched.
Finally attach the back cover to the last signature and finish off the thread with a knot.
Coptic stitch is a decorative stitch that gives a braided look on the exposed spine. It also allows for the book to lay flat rather than bend from the spine.
Stab Binding
Cut paper with a guillotine blade into the appropriate size for you book.
Gather your cut paper, covers, bookbinding mallet, awl, waxed bookbinding thread, a bookbinding needle, and scissors.
Thread your needle with a waxed bookbinding needle and arrange you paper in between your covers.
With a bookbinding mallet and an awl, punch holes into the paper.
Go back and forth stab binding, making sure you don't go over any thread twice.
Once you go over the other side and complete the entire stitch, finish off the thread with a knot.
Stab binding is a type of non adhesive binding used for centuries mainly in Asia.
Bookbinding Tools
Awls are used to punch holes into the creases of signatures (a group of paper).
A bookbinding cradle is a tool to hold the signature while you punch holes with an awl.
You must used a waxed bookbinding thread (typically with beeswax), this helps prevent tangles. Bookbinding needles are typically thicker and slightly longer, they need to be very durable.
The are for scoring and folding papers.
The are brushes used for applying adhesives and for brushing any debris.
A bookbinding mallet can be used with an awl for ease in punching holes. The screw punch can also be used to punch holes in paper or covers.
Binder clips are used to stabilize a stack of papers together. Scissors and rulers have common and various uses.
